Beyond The Nature vs. Nurture Divide
Cognition, Evolution, and Culture Speaker Series
For many years, the study of cognition has been split along a nature-nurture divide. However, in recent years, many scholars have argued that this nature vs. nurture dichotomy is too crude to capture the complexities of human cognition. Instead, the distinctive features of human thinking are due to complex processes governing cultural-genetic co-evolution. In a series of events, held in the spring of 2023, distinguished international scholars will present their current research on the evolution and development of specific areas of cognition. Given the interdisciplinary nature of this research, these events will be of great interest for students and scholars across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
Each event will focus around a theme, with a reading group, a public talk with a Q&A session, and a seminar open to students with the speaker. The reading group will take place roughly a week before the main event, and will be lead by a student from the University of Sheffield. The talk with Q&A and the seminar with the speaker will take place on the same date.
Everyone is welcome to participate in these events and it is not necessary to attend all of the events! For the seminars, priority will be given to undergraduate and postgraduate students to participate.
